Elise Bougy's meticulously crafted champagne may largely cruise under the radar, but for people who know them, they are wines to aggressively seek out.
At this point, her champagnes are nearly impossible to find.
After studying oenology at Dijon, Elise Bougy took over her family's 3ha of vineyards and quickly started to turn out beautifully expressive and seamless champagnes.
These are tension-filled and nuanced wines that have a rapier cut.
Bougy's holdings are split between Mesnil and Montagne de Reims. Le Mont Chainqueux Blanc De Noirs comes from the Montagne and is a blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier that was planted in 1965. The soils are a mix of sand, chalk, clay, and limestone.
You really sense Bougy's work in the vineyard in the Le Mont Chainqueux. This amount of clarity, depth, and detail doesn't occur without lots of care and attention. She works organically and biodynamically, which in champange is really difficult and time-consuming.
The results of this barrel-fermented and zero-sulfur champagne are mind-blowing. I'm really impressed by the wine's energy and elegant weave of citrus, herbs, and minerals.
These are champagnes that are so well-crafted and so unique that I strongly suggest that you try at least a bottle. I say that with trepidation. Production is tiny, and this is a modest parcel.
