Prévost Beguines Extra Brut NV (2014)

Posted by Joe Salamone

At this point, there's little left to be said about Prevost.

At age 21, Prevost inherited his grandmother's 2.2 hectares of Meunier vines in an obscure corner of Champagne. In seemingly no time, Prevost gained a cult following and finding his wine became an adventure.

No one working with the Pinot Meunier grape is able to turn out Champagnes as vividly elegant, precise or with a similar level of tensile minerality.

Stated simply, we're big fans of the 2014. A couple weeks ago, we got an opportunity to buy a parcel of the 2014 and without a second's thought, we jumped on it. It's a pleasure to be able to offer this wine again.

In Prevost's area of Gueux, which is in the northwest of Montagne de Reims, you find unique soils. Here, Champagne's famous chalky soils are buried deep under a mix of sand and calcareous clay, laden with sea fossils. Judging from Prevost's wines, something really special happens to Meunier here.

What we love about the 2014 is the impression of completeness that it already displays. There's a beautiful energy and clarity of expression. There's an amazing textural presence of minerality, a talc-like grip.

The 2014 is a not-to-be-missed vintage of Prevost. It's rare to get a second shot at Prevost. I'm confident that we won't get another opportunity to offer this.
