There's a magic to Lauer's Kabinetts - an unmistakable, explosive tension.
With the exception of Egon Müller, no one else in the Saar is able to marry such power, such generous depth of fruit and such a range of saturating flavor, to an architecture that is so sharply defined.
Lauer makes Kabinetts exactly how we like them.
They're nimble and packed with complexity.Lauer's focus (and to some degree, his fame) rests more squarely on the dry and dry-tasting wines. This gives Florian considerable freedom with his Prädikat wines. He does not make a Kabinett every vintage and frankly, doesn't have to. So you know when he does make one, the raw material is something very special.
Lauer's 2016 Kabinetts are dazzling. They offer a profound transparency and poise. In terms of pure pleasure, there is something incredible about Lauer's 2016s.
To start with the Kupp Kabinett, it delivers an incredible refinement, precision and mineral-laden length. It amazes with its class and incisiveness. It offers a bright and polished presentation of stone fruits that are complicated by an emphatic slate-y minerality and spices.
The 2016 marks the third vintage of Lambertskirch, and the second Kabinett. Judging by two vintages of Lambertskirch Kabinetts, the site produces dramatic wines that highlight how Kabinetts can uniquely deliver poise and weightlessness with intensity and depth. The wine packs a mindboggling amount of complexity into its lithe frame.
Lauer is convinced of Lambertskirch's greatness. Florian's family had leased Lambertskirch, which lies just down river from Schonfels, until the 1990s. Sometime around 2000, the owners of the vineyard tore up the vines, and by the time Florian purchased the vineyard composed of 0.2ha in 2010, it was covered with fruit trees. Clearing and replanting the site was incredibly hard work.
Lauer is one of our favorite producers anywhere. They are wines that we drink with abandon, especially the Kabinett. Both of these two 2016s are simply irresistible. We created the mixed 6-pack so that you can stock up. You'll be happy that you did.
