In 2006, Yvon Métras purchased a mere 0.6ha of Moulin-à-Vent. Across the board Métras is scarce, but the Moulin-à-Vent is painfully so.
The 2015 was especially difficult to find in quantity. In Beaujolais, it was warm and dry, which, along with winds, decreased yields significantly.
It's taken us a while to build up enough of Métras' 2015 Moulin-à-Vent for an offer. Today, I'm happy to offer this modest parcel of the 2015 Moulin-à-Vent that we've slowly accumulated.
2015 was a riper vintage in Beaujolais. You can think about 2015 as riper than 2014 and fresher than 2009. It's a powerful, layered vintage with an invigorating backbone.
Moulin-à-Vent is one of the Beaujolais Crus that often thrives in ripe vintages. It's commonly called "the King of Beaujolais" due to its muscular structure and complexity. It's this structure that allows MaV to benefit so much in riper vintages, preventing any flabbiness and an exaggerated dark fruit profile.
Métras' expression of MaV seems to be influenced by Fleurie. There's muscle and a very distinctive MaV iron-tinged minerality, but also a delicate grace. In the 2015, the combination is thrilling. There's the intriguing, suave textural element that defines Métras.
Métras is well known for an extra-dimension of complexity and textural intrigue that makes the wines stand alone. Vintages like 2015 take this to the extreme, delivering saturating dark fruits, spice and an ultra-suave texture.
I'll wrap this up. In closing, I'll just mention that this is a really impressive edition of Métras Moulin-à-Vent. There's sadly not a lot to go around, but this is definitely a wine that you will want to follow for the next 7-10 years.
