For me, any vintage of Cristal Rosé is one of Champagne's greatest wines. The 2012 is simply brilliant.
It is an utterly beautiful wine delivering finesse, length, and delicacy.
Cristal Rosé is always on the "buy" list of Champagne collectors, and the 2012 seems destined to be considered a top example of the wine's greatness.
As quoted by Peter Liem, just after harvest, Roederer's chef de cave Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon said: "I think we're going to produce something historic." Time is proving him correct.
I'm very happy to offer Roederer's 2012 Cristal Rosé at the very sharp price of $449.95.
What makes the 2012 so special is how it combines ripeness and high acidity. It results in a stunning combination of intensity and finesse. The harmony is breathtaking. There's silken richness, incredible detail, and an amazing cast of aromatics. This is definitely a "stars aligned" sort of vintage.
The Rosé is composed of low-yielding Pinot Noir made in the saignée method from the Bonotte-Pierre-Robert and Gargeotte vineyards in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ and Chardonnay from Mesnil and Avize. So much attention is given to Cristal's luxury status that Roederer's progressive philosophy is often overlooked. Roederer is the largest organic and biodynamic vineyard owner in Champagne. The vineyards used for Cristal Rosé were the first ones converted to organic and biodynamic viniculture.
The 2012 Rosé makes it clear that Roederer is at the top of their game. Its clarity of fruit, precision, and elegance announce that everything is being done right. As Antonio Galloni writes, the 2012 Cristal Rosé "is truly magical."
