Morstein is one of the great vineyards in all of Germany.
While Keller made the site famous in the U.S., Wittmann has to be considered the torchbearer of this fabled vineyard. In Germany he enjoys a huge reputation.
Philipp Wittmann took the helm of his family's estate in 1999 and it is without a doubt one of the most impressive estates in the Rheinhessen. Strangely, while Wittmann has a reputation in Germany, they have a much lower profile in America. Like Keller, they are dry Riesling specialists.
Morstein is famous for its laser focus and driving length. Wittmann's Morstein is razor sharp and possesses an incredible textural, muscular presence. The tightly coiled energy that Wittmann coaxes from the site is stunning.
Wittmann's 2019 Morstein is a brilliant example of this site. Morstein is an intensely limestone terroir, and the 2019 flaunts a forceful chalky minerality. It possesses powerful presence and a lifted citrus-animated vibrancy. The tensile refinement is beautifully compelling. Even in this powerful vintage, the wine is all about tension.
The quality of Wittmann's Morstein is unmistakable. In 2019, it's a must have bottle. I write this with trepidation, because quantities are very limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
