Each time that we offer Gérard's Saint-Joseph, it sells out in a matter of hours.
His Saint-Joseph Le Blanchard has such a striking purity and clarity that it's easy to understand why so many people flock to the wine.
Xavier Gérard has maintained a low profile, but he's among the most talented winemakers in the northern Rhône.
Gérard was introduced to his importer, none other than Neal Rosenthal, by the great Côte-Rôtie classicist Bernard Levet. Xavier Gérard is a young grower who took over his family's small domaine in earnest in 2012 and in no time has turned out incredibly elegant and traditionally made Syrahs and Viogniers.
The majority of Gérard's holdings are in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. His Saint-Joseph comes from Le Blanchard, a vineyard just south of Condrieu. In a good vintage, he makes a mere 2,000 bottles of the Saint-Joseph.
Le Blanchard is a fascinating expression of Saint-Joseph. It possesses an unusual finesse, agility, and perfume - elements that it shares with Cote-Rotie.
Its cooler location has helped the wine maintain a beautiful precision and bright delineated aromatics. The 2020 has a combination of layered complexity, power and cut that is really impressive. There are floral notes, spice, earth and dark fruits with nice freshness and energy on the finish.
There's an easy explanation why Gérard's Saint-Joseph sells out each time we offer it. It's extremely appealing, honest Northern Rhône Syrah at a fair price. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
