The story of Pian dell'Orino is one of location, incredible vineyard work, and sensitive winemaking. The estate is located next to the famed Biondi-Santi. Pian dell'Orino's Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach painstakingly follow biodynamic principles In the cellar, they work as naturally as possible using fairly long macerations, and aging in large botti.
The 2016 Vigneti del Versante is a monument to the results. The wine is supremely graceful, with beautiful verve, and a jaw-dropping complexity. It delivers a thrilling combination of a finessed core with explosive notes of spice, florality, earth, red fruits, and tobacco. The way that Pian dell'Orino manages tannins is really impressive. The Vigneti del Versante has a beguiling silky quality.
It serves as a perfect example of what makes Brunello a noble wine. After finding many previous vintages of Vigneti del Versante really compelling, it's nice to see them hit a home run.

I tasted the 2016 from a freshly opened bottle and from one that had been opened for two days prior that showed no signs of decline; in fact, it blossomed further. Simply stunning."
