Stand Alone Barbera:
2018 Castello di Verduno Barbera d'Alba Bricco del Cuculo

Posted by Ian McFadden

It's taken me nearly two years to get my hands on this wine.

I first tasted it in the fall of 2019 when I visited the estate, and was blown away by the wine.

Even though much of the trip was spent tasting the great 2016 Barolos and Barbarescos, the 2018 Barbera Bricco del Cuculo was the revelation of my tastings. I immediately asked the importer how much I could buy.

The 2018 Bricco del Cuculo is an outrageously compelling example of what Barbera is capable of. It's a grape that I'm fond of, but only rarely does a producer nail their Barbera. Castello di Verduno hits the mark.

The wine combines a beautiful structure, a suave and silky texture, and gorgeous finesse. Bricco del Cuculo is a limestone-rich site that sits above Barbarescos famed Faset site. Castello di Verduno's Barbera vines were planted in 1950.

Bricco del Cuculo offers up dark fruits, spice, gentle notes of earth, and a core of sleek minerality. When we opened up a bottle at the store, it was quickly drained. Everyone was really impressed by how the wine combines outright deliciousness with class and complexity.

This is simply an extraordinary Barbera that's packed with nuance, possessing an irresistible textural allure, and incredible lift. I'm very happy to offer such a stunning example of the grape.
