Stand Out Kabinett: 2014 Weiser-Künstler Ellergrub Kabinett

Posted by Joe Salamone

"This is another stunning collection by the Weiser-Künstler couple... the whole collection is a must buy." -Mosel Fine Wines

Even though the estate was founded in 2005, it's now taken for granted that Weiser-Künstler is producing some of the top wines in the Mosel. They are mentioned in the same breath as the region's best and most established estates.

Every year, their Ellergrub Kabinett is one of our favorites. An embarrassing amount gets drunk and even more goes into our cellars.

The Ellergrub Kabinett stands as a calling card for what makes Weiser-Künstler so special. The wine boasts a pristine rigor and blazing, slate-inflected energy.

Weiser-Künstler produced some of the most successful 2014s. When you combine this with the value that the Kabinett offers, this becomes one of the smartest buys in 2014 Germany. There's a deep and gripping complexity that's complemented by tense and precise minerality. Everything is beautifully harmonious with a dancing elegance.

Jean Fisch and David Rayer of Mosel Fine Wines are correct to single out Weiser-Künstler's two Kabinetts, the Ellergrub offered today and Gaispfad Trocken ($24.99.) The 2014 Ellegrub Kabinett has a multifaceted complexity and intricate mineral delicacy. It's an amazing combination.

Ellergrub is Weiser-Künstler's top site. Many German fanatics would rate the under-the-radar Ellergrub as one of the best in the Middle Mosel. Weiser-Künstler's parcel in this steeply terraced, mostly blue slate vineyard is home to hundred year old ungrafted vines

2014 is another incredibly short vintage in the Mosel. With only 3ha, there's never much to go around, but the '14s are particularly painful.
