Startling Precision
2010 Agrapart Blanc de Blancs Vénus Brut Nature

Posted by Ian McFadden

Agrapart's Champagnes are some of the most rivetingly precise and refined expressions of Chardonnay anywhere.

Vénus is their top cuvée, and it takes the theme of elegance and kinetic, chalky minerality that runs through the line-up to an ultra-compelling conclusion.

This is a Champagne that dazzles in subtle, mysterious and ultimately profound ways. It's a complexity that doesn't scream as much as whisper as it builds and takes hold of your palate.

Vénus comes from an old-vine sub-parcel of La Fosse, one of Agrapart's top vineyards, which was planted in 1959. The very chalky site is painstakingly tended and plowed by horse instead of tractor (Vénus is the name of the first draft horse.)

The Côte des Blancs had the biggest success in 2010. On paper, it was a challenging vintage. The most dedicated growers and producers, though, were able to turn out crystalline, energetic and sleekly mineral wines.

The 2010 Vénus is defined by its purity. The wine is intensely vibrant and mineral-streaked and yet it's profoundly complex with subtle stone fruits and floral notes seamlessly intermingling. The wine boasts insane mineral precision with a deep complexity.

This is a startlingly mineral, piercingly precise Champagne of the highest breeding. Few Champagnes are as multi-dimensional. When you sum it up, it's easy to see how Vénus sets itself apart as Agrapart's top wine. I should warn you that we don't have much on offer.
