Catching d'Angerville's Champans in the right vintage is an extraordinary experience.

It's one of the great distance runners of Burgundy. I've tasted mind-blowing bottles from the 60s.

Volnay is one of the more feminine and velvety expressions of Burgundy. With that said, the magic of Champans is the way it combines muscle and density with a gorgeous finesse.

The 2016 red Burgundies show an incredible concentration with a cool, mineral-laden profile. D'Angerville, and especially his Champans, thrived under these conditions.

D'Angerville's 2016 Champans has a level of concentration and structure that leaves little doubt that it will serve as a monument to this great domaine.

It's a wine of sweeping complexity with penetrating and gripping iron inflected minerality. The amount of detail and poise that the wine achieves amid its power and painstaking refinement is extraordinary.

D'Angerville is one of the storied domaines of Burgundy. Along with Lafarge, it is one of Volnay's benchmarks. I'll close by simply saying that this is a stunning example of Champans. Any fan of d'Angerville, or red Burgundy for that matter, is encouraged to pick up a 3-pack and watch the wine evolve beautifully.
