Surpassing All Expectations: 2012 Clape Cornas Renaissance

"While it's common to chase the top wines, don't miss his Cornas Renaissance in 2012. It's a terrific wine. " -Jeb Dunnuck

Everyone agrees that Clape knocked it out of the park in 2012.

Clape’s 2012 Cornas Renaissance simply blew us away. It’s perhaps the most impressive vintage of the wine that we’ve tasted. We offered the wine in February 2015 and have been in search of more ever since.

I'm a big fan of the 2012 vintage in the Northern Rhône. The wines are beautifully balanced, offering clarity and brightness, while boasting plenty of age-worthy structure. Even in the context of such a successful vintage, Clape’s Renaissance surpassed all expectations.

Renaissance is Clape's younger vine Cornas bottling, intended to be drunk earlier than his regular one. But the 2012 is an especially dead serious bottle.

Generally speaking, Clape has an intensely structured style. The 2012s drive this point home. The 2012 Renaissance has an incredibly grand and crushing architecture. It promises to age really well. Clape’s Renaissance always offers incredible value, and in a vintage like 2012 it is one of the best deals in Cornas.

The 2012 also boasts a pristine freshness and an ultra-clear expression of Cornas' granite slopes. The wine is filled with dark fruit, herbal and savory notes, and flaunts a firm mineral streak. While there’s plenty of the muscle and intensity that we’ve come to expect from Clape, there’s also a sense of elegance and refinement.

The first time that I tasted Clape's 2012 Renaissance it was clear that it had hit another level with this vintage.I've devoted a ton of energy to finding more of this wine. After lots of searching, I've only been able to gather together this small parcel. Once this is gone, I doubt there will be another chance.
