Gevrey is known for its muscle and meatiness. The lieu-dit "Aux Echezeaux" complicates this image of Gevrey somewhat. It's located in the southern part of the appellation on the border of Morey-St.-Denis. It's more delicate and has a velvety mouthfeel. Obviously, these qualities play right into Jouan's hands.
Jouan's 2018 Aux Echezeaux takes Gevrey's textbook soil-inflected minerality and adds a beguiling cast of aromatics, an enchanting textural allure and lift.
The Chambolle is always supremely graceful with a hauntingly gorgeous perfume. This is a wine of transparency and heart-breaking delicacy. It always strikes me due to just how intricate, expressive, and profoundly soulful it is. The 2018 Chambolle has a soaring finesse and gorgeous silkiness.
Both the Gevrey "Aux Echezeax" and the Chambolle are shining examples of Burgundy as it should be. They're understated, elegant, and mysterious. Don't miss these.
