The Greatest Grande Cuvée Ever?:
Krug Grande Cuvée (2008 Base)

Posted by Robert Schagrin

The just released 164th Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée is one of the most dazzling releases of Krug Grande Cuvée we've tasted.

The secret of this particular release is two-fold: the base wine is the great 2008 vintage with reserves dating back to the vaunted 1990 vintage. The result is pure magic.

This is a Grande Cuvée edition to go deep on. In my 20+ years of tasting Grande Cuvée on release, I can't remember being this impressed. Grab this while you can, as I bet it will disappear from the market much faster than past editions.

Some of my most compelling and memorable Champagne experiences have been properly cellared, old Krug Grande Cuvées. They have been absolutely heartbreaking in their depth, complexity, nuance and overall elegance. Make no mistake, Krug's Grande Cuvée ages majestically. In fact, this is one of the great secrets among Champagne fanatics.

Vinous Media's Antonio Galloni has written: "When Krug is firing on all cylinders, there really is no substitute." There's no doubt that this version exceeds expectations.

The 2008 vintage in Champagne is possibly the greatest in the past decade. It's defined by sleek energy and balance, drawing comparisons to 1988. While 2002 and 1996 are defined by their power and ripeness, the 2008 vintage delivers energy, purity, and balance. It may possess the longest finish I've ever encountered in a Grande Cuvée.

We love the way the elegant, high acid "base wine" vintages dovetail with Krug's vinous style. Vintages like 2008 play beautifully off the Maison's legendary soaring power, impeccable finesse and razor-sharp precision. It all adds up to an absolutely thrilling version of Grande Cuvée.

The Grande Cuvée is the ultimate expression of Krug; the wine the Maison considers their "Sun," around which all other Krug orbits. They will be the first to admit that Grande Cuvée is not only the wine they are most proud of, but it's also the most difficult and complex to produce. The 164th Edition of Grande Cuvée is composed of a blend of 127 wines with reserve wines from 11 different vintages dating as far back as 27 years.

The skillful blending in Krug's Grande Cuvée pulls of an incredible feat - it drinks well upon release, yet ages majestically. Certain releases age for decades. This 164th Edition is destined to be a cellar legend.
