There are few producers in Beaujolais who turn out wines with the same level of clarity and purity as Foillard.
When you taste through Foillard's line up side-by-side, it becomes very clear just how sensitive the winemaking is. Each wine is vinified exactly the same, but the differences are striking.
Since 2013, Foillard has added the Eponym bottling to his two other single vineyards Morgons, Côte du Py and Corcelette. Eponym immediately become a favorite Beaujolais.
Eponym is sourced from a tiny parcel in Les Charmes. If Côte du Py is rich and wild-cherry-accented and Corcelette has a silky delicacy, Eponym is delicate, darker-fruited and tense. All Foillards have an amazing textural intrigue, but here you get a minerality that's profoundly tactile. We love the wine's energetic mineral streak and nuanced floral notes.
2015 was a riper vintage in Beaujolais. You can think about 2015 as riper than 2014 and fresher than 2009. Les Charmes' higher elevation and nervy profile made for a really beautiful and elegant Eponym in 2015.
The 2015 Eponym flaunts its intricacy and levity. It's a powerful, layered vintage with an invigorating backbone. There's a lovely balance between richness and energy. And there's an underlying structure that pulls everything into harmony as it carries a firm stony minerality across the palate.
Foillard is the master of Morgon, delivering wines of transparency, fascination and joy. I can't imagine Foillard not being a core pillar of the Beaujolais program here. The quality, the sheer deliciousness that he delivers, and the purity are simply extraordinary.
