The Perennial Overachiever:
2016 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny

Posted by Ian McFadden

Bertheau's wines are archetypes of just how graceful and pure Burgundy can be.

They are subtle, refined and gorgeously mineral.

When you factor in the value that Bertheau's Chambolle offers, it goes a long way in explaining why it's one of the Burgundy offers that I'm most excited about each year.

In short, Chambolle is one of the most beautiful expressions of red Burgundy. It's silky, gorgeously aromatic and really refined. It's also very hard to find inexpensive Chambolle.

Sadly, in 2016, there's very little wine to go around.

The 2016 vintage in Chambolle was brutal when it came to yields. Frost ripped the vineyards. As quoted in Burghound, François Bertheau estimates that yields were down 50%.

Bertheau's 2016 possesses really impressive detail, elegance and seductive texture. In this way, it's a classic example of the wine. However, the 2016 boasts a concentration that's unusual for the wine. There's a blatant minerality and plenty of depth.

Bertheau's are some of the Burgundies that I'm most fond of. They thrive on nuance and understatement. The 2016 Chambolle is a perfect introduction to why Bertheau produces some of the most beautiful classically styled Burgundies around.
