The Untamed Beauty of Château Musar
2004 & 2006

Posted by Joe Salamone

There's something magical about Musar.

The wines combine an aristocratic air with wild, sauvage beauty. How they pull off such gamey, untamed complexity with such harmony and nobility is amazing.

These can be challenging wines, but once initiated into Musar it's easy to become obsessed. That's become very clear by how quickly our Musar offers have sold out.

If you had to point towards wines that share some spiritual kinship with Musar, it would be the great traditionalists of the Northern Rhône, and wines like old Tempier. Musar is brimming with soul and possesses more than a little wildness. It all adds up to captivating depth.

The 2004 and 2006 offer a fascinating comparison of vintages. 2004 displays a powerful structure with verve and explosive complexity. It has an earthy and gamey profile that's beautifully integrated into a stately presence. The 2006 is classic Musar. Compared to 2004, it's probably a brighter, more savory and finessed vintage. It's incredibly expressive with vivid notes of earth, spice and even floral tones.

Summing up any vintage of Musar in a tidy little package is impossible. It's far too nuanced and constantly evolving. It's here that so much of Musar's fascination lies.

Château Musar was founded in 1930 by Serge Hochar's father, Gaston, when he was 20 years old in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. Gaston immediately set the estate on the path of quality. Serge studied in Bordeaux with famed enologist Émile Peynaud and took over from his father in 1959. Serge brought the wines international renown. For more information on Musar, I encourage you to check out Levi Dalton's I'll Drink to That! interview with Serge Hochar, who sadly passed away at the end of 2014. There's simply too much to say about Musar, but there's not enough space.

To wrap up, few wines deliver the mystery and soul that Musar does. It's always a pleasure to offer Musar.
