Willi Schaefer is one of our favorite producers anywhere in the world.
Tasting through Schaefer's 2019s drove home just how extraordinary the wines are.
This is simply a don't miss vintage for Schaefer. Even judged by their superlative track record over many decades, the 2019s are stunning.
Jean Fisch and David Rayer of Mosel Fine Wines advise: "No stone should be left unturned in order to lay one’s hands on some 2019 Willi Schaefer wines". That gives you a good sense not only of how good the wines are, but also of how limited they are. This is a short vintage with a lot of excitement behind it. We expect many of Schaefer's wines to quickly disappear from the market.
The Domprobst Spätlese #5 is a perennial favorite of Schaefer's stable and one of the wines that people most fervently search for. We don't expect our modest parcel to stick around for long.
Christoph Schaefer compares the 2019s to their 2001s and incredible 2012s. Tasting the Domprobst Spätlese #5, it's easy to understand the comparison. This a grandly sculpted vintage of the wine with amazing drive, length, and balance. The harmony and tension is profound.
This is one of the top collections of the vintage. The clarity, depth, and overall completeness of the Domprobst Spätlese #5 dramatizes just how wildly successful Schaefer was in 2019. Schaefer rarely misses, but they definitely nailed it with this wine.

Jean Fisch and David Rayer of Mosel Fine Wines: "The 2019er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese AP 05 was made essentially from grapes harvested in the Fergert sector of the vineyard, and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It proves beautifully restrained and reveals a greatly fresh, pure, and wonderfully floral nose vineyards peach, pear, candied grapefruit, anise, herbs, spices, and tangerine. The wine develops some gorgeous fruity presence underpinned by ripe yet refined yellow fruits on the palate, and leaves a sense of smooth delicacy in the hugely long and intense finish. There is still a feel of intense and Auslese-styled sweetness, but the acidity comes through in the after-taste to add spices and cut. This truly remarkable wine only needs some patience in order to fully shine."
