Turn Back The Clock Red Burgundy
2008 Chapelle Santenay 1er Cru Gravières

Posted by Ian McFadden

This is old-school styled Burgundy at old-school prices.

It's difficult to underscore how much of a rarity things like this are today.

Domaine Paul Chapelle was founded in 1976 when he inherited some vines in the Santenay 1er Cru Gravières. He had already spent a decade working as an enologist for many of Burgundy's biggest names - Ramonet, Lafarge, de Montille, Pousse d’Or, etc. Sadly, Paul Chapelle passed away in 2016. Today, his daughter, Christine Beck Chapelle, is at the helm.

From the start, the domaine set out to craft deeply mineral and classic red Burgundy. In line with the style and old-fashioned practice, they aged wines for extended periods before release.

Gravières is known to be a top site of Santenay. The soil is composed of gravel and limestone. The 1er Cru finds a beautiful expression in Chapelle's tightly knit mineral style.

This is especially true of the 2008 Gravières. It was a brilliant vintage for the wine. We've loved 2008 Red Burgundies from day one, for their mineral purity, classical style and subtle poise. It's a combination that perfectly suits Chapelle's soulful and savory signature.

It's very rare that I get to offer red Burgundy with age on it for this price. I encourage you to take advantage of the 3-pack pricing because the wine promises to get even better with time. We've tasted bottles from the 80s that are still showing well.
