Jochen Beurer's Rieslings are a revelation.
This becomes incredibly pronounced when you reach the Grosses Gewächs.
Beurer's wines have developed a huge following at Crush. Just over a year ago we offered Beurer's 2013 GG. It was pretty amazing to watch people taste this new producer to the U.S. and then, have them come back for three or four more bottles.
My first Beurer left one of the most vivid impressions on my taste memory. They have a ridiculously complex minerality unlike anything I've tasted before. Simply put, Beurer's wines are all about minerality. It's a brilliant, kinetic, textured and layered minerality. The wines feel ripe and complete, but fruit is besides the point.
Beurer is located in Württemberg, a German wine region that we rarely see in this country. Instead of the Mosel's slate, this is limestone and sandstone territory. The GG is sourced from his best vineyard on Kieselsandstein, which features poor, red and chalky limestone.
The 2014 GG is a gorgeous follow up to the 2013. There's a bit more weight this year, but it doesn't come at the expense of the finesse and the mysterious stony depth that made the 2013 so captivating.
This is an awe-inspiring expression of Riesling. Every time that I drink a Beurer it's an eye-opening experience. The 2014 is one of the most memorable dry wines of the vintage.
