"Very pure and unforced"
2015 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes

In 2012, I took a flyer on a back-vintage parcel of Bertheau and the wines immediately became an obsession of mine.

I'm happy to kick off our 2015 campaign with Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru Charmes.

Bertheau's wines are archetypes of just how graceful and pure Burgundy can be. It's a style that flourished in 2015. And, as always, the Charmes serves as a perfect summary of Bertheau's work.

The problem with Bertheau is that production of his 1er Crus is small. His parcel in Charmes is only 0.66ha and in a vintage like 2015, where demand is huge and yields were modest, nailing down decent quantities is hard work.

Even seasoned and reserved Burgundy experts are saying that 2015 is one of the great red Burgundy vintages of the past three decades.

The vintage boasts an incredibly concentrated profile with plentiful, but refined tannins, and a staggering amount of freshness and elegance for such a ripe vintage. It's a dream brew.

Few producers do purity and transparency better than Bertheau, and I've always loved the Charmes for how it dramatizes these qualities. It's easy to imagine the 2015 being completely stunning and boldly delivering all the haunting beauty and finesse of Chambolle.

Bertheau's wines age beautifully on their harmony and precision. I expect this to be a legendary vintage for the wine. I suggest that you jump on this because I don't see our parcel lasting very long.
