Volnay Distance Runner - Bookend Vintages:
2013 & 2015 D'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

Posted by Ian McFadden

Volnay is one of the more feminine and velvety expressions of Burgundy.

With that said, the magic of Champans is the way it combines muscle and density with a gorgeous finesse.

Today, I'm excited to celebrate d'Angerville's work in Champans with two radically different vintages.

Every vintage, I always make it a point to cellar a healthy amount of Champans. It has an extraordinary track record for aging. Every time we've had the opportunity to drink old Champans, they've been amazing. We’ve had bottles with fifty years of age that were still gorgeously fresh and completely stunning.

I've been on a d'Angerville buying tear lately. Pairing the 2013 and 2015 was something that I couldn't resist due to their contrasts. 2013 is a brighter and more difficult vintage, but one where d'Angerville produced brilliant wines. The 2015 vintage is dark, powerful, and highly regarded.

D'Angerville's 2013s stand out for their striking clarity and precision. The 2013 Champans is completely ravishing. The site's iron minerality is complemented by high-toned floral notes, spices, and a beautiful combination of structure and lift. We opened a mag of 2013 Champans and were blown away by it. The value that the 2013 offers is really incredible.

Simply put, d'Angerville's 2015s are epic. By now, this isn't shocking news to many of you. Word has been out about the 2015s for some time. The 2015 Champans is seriously intense, with saturating dark fruits, and a lovely suave texture.

I think the most succinct way to explain why it seemed smart to couple the 2013 and 2015 Champans was that they served as a potent reminder that every vintage that d'Angerville produces is worth checking out and that you can find serious value very often. The 2013 doesn't cost much more than many villages Burgundies from other top producers.

I strongly advise you to take advantage of the special 4-pack pricing. The 2015 will likely age a bit longer, but both bottles will be fascinating to track.
