Volnay Distance Runner:
2008 Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

Posted by Ian McFadden

Catching d'Angerville's Champans in the right vintage is an extraordinary experience.

Last weekend, we offered the amazing 2010 Champans. Today, I'm happy to offer the 2008, another personal favorite vintage of Champans. These are the only bottles available in the country.

Volnay is one of the more feminine and velvety expressions of Burgundy. With that said, the magic of Champans is the way it combines muscle and density with a gorgeous finesse.

Across the board, d'Angerville's 2008s blew me away on release and have continued to do so. The Champans is really beautiful.

The 2008 Champans possesses an extraordinary terroir imprint. You get high-toned floral and spice notes along with iron-inflected earthly mineral. The wine's painstaking detail, length, and finesse is remarkable. It's a top example of the soaring beauty of the 2008 vintage.

Champans is one of the great distance runners of Burgundy. I've tasted mind-blowing bottles from the 60s. Everything is in place for the 2008 to age beautifully. I feel very lucky to have landed a parcel of the 2008 Champans. I doubt that it will stick around for very long.

Burghound: "This is decidedly less elegant but actually a bit more complex with iron and earth notes adding interest to the cool red pinot fruit aromas that slide gracefully into rich and full-bodied flavors that are underpinned by quite firm and serious but ripe tannins and excellent length on the long, mouth coating and impressively intense finish. As it usually is, this is a relatively powerful wine with excellent aging potential."
