Wine of the Year Revisited in Magnum: 2008 Moncuit Chetillons Blanc de Blancs MAGNUM

Posted by Ian McFadden

Chétillons is one of the greatest patches of earth for Chardonnay.

Which explains why I was so excited to hear that 2008 would be Robert Moncuit's inaugural release from this site.

I immediately set out to taste it. Once I did, I was blown away and made it my Wine of the Year in 2015.

For me, it's vintages like 2008 and wines like Chétillons where buying mags seems essential. Champagne out of magnum is a very special thing, especially with age. Out of magnum, Champagnes are always fresher and feel even finer.

It’s impossible not to set a high bar for Chétillons, especially when it’s from the 2008 vintage. Chétillons lies in the village of Mesnil, which produces some of the most profound expressions of Chardonnay on the planet.

Aided by 55+ year old vines, the 2008 Chétillons boasts the penetrating, ultra-elegant minerality that sums up Mesnil at its best with an expansive complexity. The combination of breadth and tension is mesmerizing.

The 2008 vintage in Champagne is shaping up to be one of the best of this century so far. The wines have a tension, length and class that's heartbreaking.

I'm really happy to revisit my 2015 wine of the year in magnum. This is one of the Champagnes that's destined to become a cult bottling.
