Yin and Yang Peters Style:
Pierre Peters Réserve Oubliée

Posted by Ian McFadden

Finding Pierre Peters' Oubliée in quantity can seem impossible.

Pierre Peters is one of my favorite producers in all of Champagne. Since the first release of Oubliée, I've devoted a lot of effort to tracking down bottles.

Today, I'm happy to offer the results of a recent buying spree. Be warned, though, that the quantities are very modest. This is one of those emails that I would only sneak in over a holiday weekend.

Pierre Peters has a nearly unparalleled mastery of the Côte des Blancs - the wines flaunt incredible refinement and mineral-inflected elegance. The Oubliée shows a fascinating side of Peters' style. In short, it represents the marriage of deep, savory complexity with zingy and chalky energy.

Oubliée comes from the same perpetual cuvée, which dates back to 1998, as the Cuvée de Réserve. Where Oubliée differs is that it ages longer on the lees. This creates a very distinctive wine compared to the Cuvée de Réserve.

Peters' Oubliée is textural and razor sharp. And it combines these two contrasting elements with beautiful harmony. It shows notes of mushrooms, bruised herbs, spice and saline, plus citrus and high-toned florality. The thrill of Oubliée is how it displays a mature complexity, an explosive midpalate and a light-on-its-feet persistence.

This is one of the most fascinating wines in Peters' line-up. I'll close by repeating quantities are very limited. Please give us your ideal order and we’ll do our best.
