2016 Chave St-Joseph

Posted by Ian McFadden

Along with Pierre Gonon, Chave produces our favorite expression of St. Joseph.

Chave's St. Joseph is something that we go deep on every vintage.

For us, it's where the value lies. We've been amazed at how well Chave's St. Joseph ages. A bottle from 1995 opened a couple of years ago blew us away.

The 2016 vintage in the Northern Rhone is spectacular.
The wines possess great concentration, but they also have a dynamic mineral quality that creates an added sense of elegance and energy.

Chave's 2016 St. Joseph is, unsurprisingly, a stunner. There's a soaring power, but also a regal elegance. The spiced red fruits are complemented by a mineral spine and deep savory notes of olives, herbs and smoke.

The Chave family has deep roots in St. Joseph, dating all the way back to 1481. In his fascinating I’ll Drink to That! interview, Jean-Louis describes the domaine’s history in St. Joseph, and his vision to restore his family’s holdings to their former glory.

Jean-Louis has been a major proponent of St. Joseph’s potential, buying choice parcels and painstakingly rebuilding terraces there since the 1990’s. Today, the Chave family home is in Mauves, in the beating heart of St. Joseph.

This is one of those wines that I immediately bought a six pack of for the cellar. Everything is in place for an absolutely killer wine and I can't wait to see it evolve over the next couple of decades.
