2019 Keller Abtserde Grosses Gewächs

Posted by Ian McFadden

Simply put, Keller's 2019s are dynamite.

Klaus Peter Keller himself has said that 2019 was one of the best vintages of the past twenty years.

The vintage produced concentrated, tactile wines with a gorgeous thread of acidity. These qualities of the vintage helped produce epic Grosses Gewächs at Keller.

At this point, Keller is recognized as one of the greatest winemakers in the world. They are some of the grandest and most statuesque Rieslings. It's impossible to not take notice of the wines. When the wines hit the extraordinary level that they did in 2019, they can easily hang with the best out there.

The 2019 Abtserde GG boasts mind-boggling combination of concentration and laser-like focus and cut. There are few wines around that cover such a range, and even fewer that do so with a comparable grace and harmony.

Abtserde is Keller's top site. In the Middle Ages, this site was considered the finest vineyard in Keller's area of the Rheinhessen, known as the Hügelland. The wines from the vineyard were strictly reserved for the Bishop of nearby Worms.

Abtserde seems to consolidate the best attributes of Keller's Hubacher, Kirchspiel, and Morstein and take them to a thunderingly complex conclusion. It has the power of Hubacher and the minerality of Morstein and Kirchspiel. From here, Abtserde brings more finesse and ungodly length.

As you can imagine there's very little of this to go around. While we've limited the scope of the offering, I can't imagine not having to allocate this.

Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "Grown only 200 meters away from the old-vines Morstein, the 2019 Abts E(rde) Riesling GG combines perfect fruit ripeness with delicate concentration as well as notes of chalk, flint and iron. There is a similarity to both Kirchspiel (minty, herbal and chalky notes) and Morstein (transcendency), but this has unique ripeness and concentration of fruit, with shredded lemon rind and unique finesse. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a supple and intense yet delicate and silky Riesling with a firm structure built by very fine tannins and remarkably fine acidity. There is this slushy chalkiness combined with lemon oil typical for this terroir. The finish is highly intense and long."
