Crystal Clear Elegance: 2010 Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets

Posted by Ian McFadden

I'm going to keep this short. This is an extremely rare wine from a great vintage.

Lafarge has a mere 0.3ha in Caillerets, one of Volnay's top sites. Finding the wine in any quantity is next to impossible.

Finding Lafarge's Caillerets is always difficult. Finding top wines from 2010 Burgundy is really hard these days. The vintage is just so good and was so low yielding that many of the wines quickly became ghosts. This is just to further underscore the rarity here.

If Volnay had a Grand Cru, many Burgundy experts say it would be Les Caillerets. The profile of Les Caillerets is one of tension-filled fineness and crystal clear elegance. The light-reflective pebbles that give the site its name also lend a deep mineral character to the wines. These are wines about minerality, finesse, purity of flavor - they are direct and defined and can have almost forceful mineral spines, yet Volnay is always subtle.

Caillerets can be shy in its youth, another reason why it may be left outside of the Clos des Chênes-sized spotlight. But if Caillerets takes a while to reach its apogee, it will no doubt get there - and wow, will it be worth it. This wine has incredible aging potential.

In 2010, Lafarge's Caillerets offers up the supreme mineral elegance of Caillerets with an alarming clarity. It comes across as discreet and feminine yet rigorously intense and full of snap. Burghound's note captures this really well: "The detailed and racy medium-bodied flavors possess plenty of underlying tension that imparts a real sense of focused energy to the mouth coating and beautifully well-delineated finish."

Like I said, I don't see any benefit to fanning the fire. This is the rarest wine of the Lafarge stable from an ultra-pure and just impressive vintage. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.

Burghound: "This is also ultra-elegant but more complex with hints of spice and dried flowers adding depth to the very fresh red pinot fruit and stone scents. The detailed and racy medium-bodied flavors possess plenty of underlying tension that imparts a real sense of focused energy to the mouth coating and beautifully well-delineated finish. A classic and very understated Caillerets."
