In The Shadows of Mt. Blanc - Mountain Nebbiolo:
2012 Ferrando Carema Etichetta Bianca

Posted by Joe Salamone

Few wines have attracted the fan club that Ferrando's Carema has. The reason is simple: Carema is alpine Nebbiolo of breathtaking grace.

Ferrando's importer Neal Rosenthal has no shortage of great wine at his fingertips. Think of people like Fourrier and Barthod, and yet he's written: "When I am asked which wine would I choose were I to be restricted to a single one, my answer is: Carema."

Ferrando's Carema is Nebbiolo at its purest, its most energetic, and its most aromatic. At high altitudes, in the shadows of Mt. Blanc, on soil that's pretty much eroded rock, the grape assumes a level of finesse that's gorgeous and hauntingly singular.

Sadly, for the past four vintages the availability of Ferrando's Carema has dropped precipitously. We're seeing about one-third as much wine as we used to. This means that our allocation doesn't last long.

Carema is a mountain wine showing an incredible piercing tension and perfume. In these northern reaches, a warm vintage like 2012 brings an extra dose of texture and complexity that's fascinating.

While even in the most powerful vintages Ferrando's Carema maintains a delicacy and lithe frame, it ages really beautifully. Its brisk spine of acidity and overall harmony allow it to age 15-20+ years.

As I mentioned earlier, there's just not much of the 2012 Etichetta Bianca available. Every time that we offer the Etichetta Bianca, Ferrando's fan club comes out strong. Let us know how many bottles you'd like and we'll do our best.
