D'Angerville's 2017s are simply gorgeous.
Guillaume d'Angerville describes the 2017s as having “a harmonious blend of finesse and energy with excellent terroir transparency.” This is spot on and the reason we fell in love with this wine.
We've been huge fans of his 2017s since the start and have been offering the wines at every chance. Sadly, the 1er Cru Clos des Angles will very likely be our final 2017 d'Angerville offering.
In 2008, when d'Angerville released his first vintage of the 1er Cru Clos des Angles, it was fascinating to see the Volnay master with a new terroir.
Clos des Angles is a 1er Cru that borders the Fremiets and produces a beautiful wine. If the way you think about Volnay is of seductive textures, spiced cherry fruit and dark minerality, the Clos des Angles is a textbook example. It blatantly flaunts what makes Volnay such a charming, complex, and compelling area.
The 2017 is a completely seductive example of the wine. It has an incredible lift, rich velvet-y fruit, and notes of earth. Besides the wine's irresistible texture, I really enjoy the bright high notes of dried flowers and refined precision.
D'Angerville is one of our favorite producers of red Burgundy. His Volnays are benchmark examples, equal parts silk and velvet and always heartbreakingly elegant and mineral. The 2017 Clos des Angles is a powerful summary of this and the outrageous quality of d'Angerville's 2017s.
