The Alpine Distance Runner
2015 Ferrando Carema Etichetta Nera

Posted by Joe Salamone

The longevity of Ferrando’s Carema Etichetta Nera is legendary.

Neal Rosenthal, Ferrando’s importer, speaks of a 1964 Etichetta Nera that hit its apogee in 1998—at 34 years of age. This is a bottle that rewards patience.

Ferrando has a very loyal long-time fan base. Their alpine Nebbiolos represent the pinnacle of the grape’s elegance and grace. They are the most pure, energetic, and aromatic expressions of nebbiolo in the world.

Compared to Bianca, Etichetta Nera is richer, denser, more masculine and intense. It’s a powerhouse wine, but with breathtaking finesse.

The Etichetta Nera is only produced in the best vintages from the best sites, usually the Silanc and Siei vineyards. 2015 Etichetta Nera is a total knock-out with serious length and structure. It’s concentrated and deeply complex: dark cherry, tobacco, kirsch, licorice, wild flowers and dried herbs. The 2015 clearly demonstrates why Rosenthal says Ferrando’s Carema is his desert island wine.

Ferrando’s Etichetta Nera is one of the wines we get asked about very often. In the years it is produced, only 100 cases make it to the U.S.—and they sell fast.
