The Cult Of Gonon:
2016 Gonon Saint-Joseph

Posted by Ian McFadden

Gonon's 2016 Saint Joseph is a masterpiece.

It's a wine that I buy every chance that I get.

The 2016 northern Rhônes have become an obsession of ours. They're so clear, concentrated, and classically proportioned. In terms of recent vintages, the only comparisons that you can draw are 2010 and 2013.

Gonon's Saint-Joseph represents a high point of the great vintage. The 2016 Saint-Joseph has a startling clarity and serious, finely detailed length. It delivers an intricate and detailed presentation of blackberries, olives, violets, spice, and forest floor notes wrapped around a smoke-infused minerality. At this young stage, you get a vivid impression of how well composed and deep it is. It's very easy to imagine it aging beautifully.

I strongly encourage you to check out Levi Dalton's I'll Drink To That! interview with Jean Gonon. It offers a direct line into the workings and philosophy of the domaine.

Sadly, the days of an unlimited supply of Gonon are long gone. I seriously doubt that our modest parcel will last the weekend. If you're interested, don't hesitate.
