For scholars of the Saar, the Schonfels is famous as one of Lauer's most cruel sites.
It's a deadly steep, cliff-vineyard with 100-year-old ungrafted vines (some of the oldest in this famous valley) battered by cold winds.
The wines from Schonfels have an unreal density and sleek steeliness.
For years Lauer has shaped one of the greatest dry wines of the Saar from this site. In 2021, for the first time, he also made a tiny amount of the Kabinett.
Today we present the second-ever Lauer Schonfels Kabinett at $54.95 per bottle and $49.95 in 4-packs.
The 2022 Schonfels Kabinett is a worthy follow up to the 2021. It possesses a similar energy, the clarity, cut and stony core. One of the defining qualities of 2022 Germany, and especially Lauer, is the incredible delicacy - the low alcohols, soil-transparency, and vibrant and fine acids. If 2021 is a hammer; 2022 is an arrow - more delicate, but also sharper.
Truly there are few Kabinetts in 2022 with the compressed concentration, the fine layers of citrus, stone and salt, the formidable yet nimble architecture. Lauer's Schonfels Kabinett is a true joy to drink now. It will only open up and gain in presence through the next decade.
