The Other Side of Chave:
2014 Chave St. Joseph

"The 2014 St Joseph Domaine is a wine readers should buy by the case" - Jeb Dunnuck

Along with Pierre Gonon, Chave produces our favorite expression of St. Joseph.

For lovers of Chave’s Hermitage, this should come as no surprise. Few producers are able to render Syrah with as much depth, detail and sophistication. The St. Joseph is where the value is at.

We've been amazed at how well Chave's St. Joseph ages. A recently opened 1995 blew us away.

The Chave family has deep roots in St. Joseph, dating all the way back to 1481. In his fascinating I’ll Drink to That! interview, Jean-Louis describes the domaine’s history in St. Joseph, and his vision to restore his family’s holdings to their former glory.

Jean-Louis has been a major proponent of St. Joseph’s potential, buying choice parcels and painstakingly rebuilding terraces there since the 1990’s. Today, the Chave family home is in Mauves, in the beating heart of St. Joseph.

The 2014 St. Joseph boasts a medley of ultra dark pure fruit, violets, pepper, olives, smoke and dried herbs, wrapped around a granite mineral core. It’s complex, savory and structured, but with brilliant clarity and precision. In 2014, the wine is deep and layered, but also energetic, lifted and long.

Simply put, the 2014 St. Joseph is a gorgeous example of Chave’s mastery, and one that represents incredible value. To return to Jeb Dunnunk's quote, this is something that you'll want to stock up on. We created special 4-packs for that reason.

Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate: "The 2014 St Joseph Domaine is a wine readers should buy by the case. It’s not going to be the longest-lived St Joseph out there, but it’s absolutely loaded with character. I was able to drink a bottle of this over lunch and it’s one of those bottles that’s always the first to be emptied. Ripe, polished and sexy, with medium-bodied richness, it has perfumed notes of dark fruits, graphite, crushed flowers and spice in an ethereally textured, seamless package."
