Lafarge's wines have an understated grace that borders on magical.
There are times when I can imagine drinking nothing besides Lafarge. That speaks volumes about their consistency, soulfulness and age-worthiness.
Today, I'm happy to offer two of Lafarge's top wines, Clos du Château des Ducs & Clos des Chênes.
Lafarge's 2017s impress with their crackling brightness and brilliant clarity. It's difficult not to be wowed by the wines' detail, precision, and harmony. There's a completeness to the wines that's really compelling.
The Clos du Château des Ducs is muscular and has an intense mineral imprint. There's an incredible purity in its presentation of the red fruits, spice, and floral notes. For all of its earthy punch, it still comes across as beautifully elegant.
Lafarge's wines are known for gorgeous clarity and precision. Clos des Chênes represents the pinnacle of these elements. For me, like so many others, there’s a level of refinement that makes it stand out.
Lafarge is a very special producer for me. These two wines dramatize what makes Lafarge so great. It's been five years since I've been able to offer Ducs or Chênes. I'm happy to have the opportunity to offer these two wines, but doubt that they'll stick around for long.

2017 Lafarge Volnay:
2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs Special Bottle Price: $209.95
Burghound:
"Once again an exceptionally fresh and bright nose mixes ultra-pure red berry aromas with those of spice, tea, lilac and rose petal notes. The mouth feel is notably finer than that of the Clos des Chênes as the mid-palate is supple yet the gorgeously textured backend tightens up considerably and displays superb intensity on the very firm and well-balanced finish. It's rare that the Clos du Château des Ducs matches the Clos des Chênes qualitatively but it may well in 2017. Either way, this is terrific."
2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes Special Bottle Price: $214.95
Burghound:
"A brooding but wonderfully fresh nose mingles notes of various red berries, spice, earth and plenty of floral influences. The sleek, intense and muscular large-scaled flavors possess excellent power before culminating in a stony and hugely long finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This too is explicitly built for the long haul and is a wine that's going to need at least a decade first."
