"A wine of total finesse" - Antonio Galloni
2016 Poderi Colla Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose

Posted by Ian McFadden

Simply put, Poderi Colla produced astonishingly good 2016s.

Their 2013s were revelatory, but the 2016s even surpass this high yardstick.

In March, we offered Poderi Colla's 2016 Barbaresco Roncaglie. Today I'm happy to offer their 2016 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose for $62.95 on bottles and $59.95 in 4-packs.

The value that Poderi Colla's wines offer is off the charts. The 2016 Bussia is an utterly classic Barolo displaying the profound and subtle complexity that only traditionally made Nebbiolo can achieve. The fact that this can be had for $60 is unheard of these days.

The 2016 Bussia makes clear how the vintage almost miraculously combines concentration with finesse and detail. You get gorgeous refinement, hauntingly complex perfume, and a subtle depth that's seriously compelling.

Poderi Colla is a fairly new estate. It was founded in 1994 by Tino Colla and his niece Federica, who is the daughter of the legendary winemaker Beppe Colla. These familial ties allow the estate to bring in the crucial guidance of Beppe Colla, one of the most insightful and important figures in Piedmont's history.

Beppe Colla was the owner of Prunotto. Along with producing many brilliant bottles at Prunotto in the 60s, 70s and 80s, Beppe Colla was the first to produce single cru bottlings and was a key figure in creating the appellation rules. Reportedly, Bussia was Beppe Colla's favorite Barolo vineyard. For anyone interested in the history of Piedmont, Levi Dalton's I'll Drink To That! interview with Beppe Colla is not to be missed.

The amount of finesse and seemingly endless shadings of complexity that the 2016 Bussia offers is simply thrilling. I'm always very happy to find wines that work at such an elite level, but carry an accessible price tag. It's very rare that I encounter a wine that offers as much as the 2016 Bussia does. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this offer.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media:

"The 2016 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is a wine of total finesse. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mint and spice give the 2016 captivating inner perfume to match its translucent, mid-weight personality. Pliant, exquisitely layered and so incredibly inviting, the 2016 is going to be tempting early. It is a fabulous wine in every way."
