An Undeniable Master
2015 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cerretta & Barolo Francia

The Barolos of Roberto Conterno are simply profound.

The explanation for their greatness is easy. Roberto’s exacting standards focus on perfecting every little detail. The sum is an almost logic-defying profundity.

It's impossible not to compare Cerretta to Cascina Francia. Cerretta is the powerhouse of the two. If Cascina Francia often shows an elegant mineral core, Cerretta carries a raw power that's thrilling. There's a nearly overwhelming and kaleidoscopic complexity with an underlying grip that's unrelenting. Yet, there's something about how Cerretta carries all of this that comes across with a certain amount of delicacy and loads of refinement.

The 2015 Cerretta is gorgeous. Antonio Galloni's tasting note nails it when he writes: "the Cerretta is positively stellar... the 2015 is so refined". The precision and class on display are world-class.

The 2015 Barolo Francia is explosive and powerful. Galloni calls it "an immense, towering Barolo." It isn't shy in the power department but also struts the breeding and finesse that Conterno endows the wine with.

I tasted both wines during my visit to Conterno last fall. They blew me away. I immediately started hunting them down. I'm offering the two wines as a pair, as they make up beautiful bookends in the Conterno portfolio that will be fascinating to compare for years to come. I'm happy to offer up this modestly sized parcel today. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "Conterno's 2015 Barolo Cerretta is sensual and inviting, until the firm Nebbiolo tannins kick in. Bright floral and orange zest notes perk up a core of sweet red cherry fruit. Medium in body and beautifully persistent, the Cerretta is positively stellar. Just as it was from barrel, the 2015 is so refined, so alluringly young, that it really does not seem like a Serralunga Barolo at all."

"The 2015 Barolo Francia is a soaring, regal wine endowed with tremendous intensity in all of its dimensions. The most reticent and inward of the 2015s, the Francia possesses superb textural density and persistence all the way through to the explosive finish. An immense, towering Barolo, the Francia is positively stellar. It is also going to require a number of years to be at its best. In recent years, the Conterno Barolo Francia has often been relatively accessible post bottling, the 2015 is far from that."
