Since I first tasted Cascina Fontana's wines in 2012, the wines have become go-to examples of unyieldingly old-school Barolo.
Today I'm very excited to offer a back-vintage example from the great 2010 vintage.
At this point, 2010 Barolo doesn't need much of an introduction. When you taste the 2010s, it becomes immediately clear that it's an important vintage. There's such a purity of expression, elegance, and overall harmony. Even as someone with so much experience in Piedmont, Galloni comes right out and calls the vintage "the greatest young Barolo vintage I have tasted."

Cascina Fontana's 2010 is a dream brew. It has the concentration, structure, and power of the vintage with a really elegant expression of the fineness that Nebbiolo is capable of. There is a kaleidoscopic mix of earth, herb, and flower.
Cascina Fontana is a tiny 4ha estate. The wines keep a very low profile largely because so little wine sees the light of day. The people who know them throughout Europe buy up the majority of the meager stock. The silver lining here is that their low profile keeps the prices beyond fair.
The estate is led by Mario Fontana, the sixth generation to make wine here. These are old-school Barolos. While reviewing Cascina Fontana's 2008, Antonio Galloni commented that it "reminds me of the super-traditional Barolos I tasted with my father when I was a child." That could serve as a synopsis of their style in general.
I'm very happy to have the opportunity to offer this. The 2010 Piedmont wines are absolutely stunning, and opportunities to offer them at this point are very rare.
