Full-Throttle Nobility
2019 Brovia Barolo Rocche di Castiglione

Posted by Joe Salamone

Out of Brovia's consistently stunning line-up of single Crus, Rocche is always the stand out.

Brovia is now firmly established as one of the top producers of Barolo. While it's dangerous to anoint a single bottling as king, that's exactly how we feel about Rocche.

As we stated in a previous Brovia offer, their 2019s are some of the most structured and compelling of the vintage. The 2019 Rocche is a wine of full-throttle nobility with intensity to spare.

Rocche is a key site for Brovia. Not only does Brovia have a very choice parcel in the vineyard, but it’s their oldest holding and home to their oldest vines. If we were to tally up our favorite bottles of Brovia, ones from Rocche would dominate.

In Rocche, you find a gorgeous balance between the more muscular Barolos of Monforte and Serralunga and the more perfumed and feminine examples from La Morra. Rocche leads with beautifully complex floral, red fruit, and spice notes, backed by a firm edge of tannin. Above all, Rocche is about aromatics and elegance.

The 2019 is a deep and powerful expression of the vineyard. It offers up explosive dark fruits with spice and layered savory notes of herbs and earth. The way that it manages such harmony and poise while being brooding and muscular is really impressive.

As I mentioned earlier, Rocche is a special bottling at Brovia. Even in their stunning lineup, Rocche stands out for its depth, aromatic nuance, and how finely calibrated it is. These qualities really stand out in 2019.

Title

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media:

"The 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a potent, full-bodied wine. Dried cherry, leather, smoke, tobacco, dried herbs and menthol lend brooding intensity to this decidedly virile, Imposing Barolo from Rocche di Castiglione. Dark fruit, iron, sage, mint, red fruit, sweet pipe tobacco and cedar. The 2019 was super-impressive from barrel, but the bottled wine only showed itself with several hours of aeration. It will need years to be at its finest."
