Old School Piedmont:
2014 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Tre Tine

Posted by Ian McFadden

The wines of Giuseppe Rinaldi are among the greatest traditional wines of the Piedmont.

They hardly need an introduction.

The wine world has become obsessed with Rinaldi's soulful, finessed, and old-school style. Accordingly, the wines have become very hard to find.

Everything that Rinaldi touches seems to be given a level of seriousness, sternness, and complexity. It's clear that no concessions are made. Sadly, Giuseppe Rinaldi passed away in 2018. His daughter Marta joined him in the winery in 2008, and his other daughter, Carlotta, returned in 2012. They have continued the iconic traditionalism of the estate.

The Barolos combine this unyielding old-school signature with a beautiful elegance. In short, this is the magic of Rinaldi's Barolos.

While 2014 was a trickier vintage due to frost and rain, the most successful producers took advantage of the gorgeous September to make bright and classically structured wines. Rinaldi is among those who made beautiful wines in this vintage.

The Tre Tine bottling is sourced from three of Barolo's top vineyards: Le Coste, San Lorenzo, and Ravera. In 2014, the Tre Tine has a pristine character and loads of aromatic complexity. There's a finessed, lifted quality that really sets off the beguiling assortment of herbs, spices, and dark fruits. At a decade old, it is just entering its drinking window and is showing beautifully.

I'm going to wrap this up. There's no point in fanning the fire. This is a modest parcel that I expect to quickly disappear.
