While Roagna is closely associated with Barbaresco, the Barolo Pira is, along with Barbaresco Pajè, a flagship bottling.
Roagna's Pira is always one of the most finessed and lifted of their collection.
The Roagna family purchased the monopole site in 1989. It is endowed with vines going back to 1937 and a fascinating soil composition of iron-rich limestone and blue and grey marls.
Over the past few weeks, we've been tasting through Roagna's 2017. Overall, they're easily some of the top wines of the vintage. What's very clear is that the Pira vineyard was the biggest success of the lineup. There's a clarity and harmony to the wines that set them apart.
Roagna's 2017 Pira is jaw-droppingly good. It boasts an incredible spectrum of layered red fruits, game, earth, tar, herbs, and spice. All of this is backed up by a beautiful finesse and verve.
For years now, Roagna has been one of the most exciting estates in all of Piedmont. Along with Conterno, Mascarello, and Rinaldi, Roagna is a part of Piedmont's elite. The success of the 2017 Pira highlights the level that Roagna is working at.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: ""The 2017 Barolo Pira is a powerful, intensely savory wine. Dark cherry, herbs, leather incense and licorice all add to an impression. The Pira Barolo is one of the most reticent wines in this entire collection. It is hard to read today, despite its obvious weight and character."
