Everything was in place for Nervi-Conterno to turn out an absolute stunner. And they did in a major way.
The 2016 Gattinara explodes with aromatic complexity while offering stunning detail. The amount of concentration, gracefulness, and snap that it offers is compelling.
Antonio Galloni writes that the wine "exudes precision and nuance to burn." That sums it up nicely.
In 2018, I named Nervi-Conterno's 2013 Molsino my wine of the year. We've been fans of the northern Piedmont since we opened fifteen years ago. However, what's happening at Nervi-Conterno is game-changing.
Of course, what's happening at Nervi-Conterno shouldn't come as a surprise. Roberto Conterno is simply a force of nature and one of the most talented people working in wine today.
Conterno has been involved in the estate since 2011, when Erling Astrup, a wine collector, and friend of his, purchased the winery and sought his counsel. In 2018, he bought the estate outright. I visited Nervi last fall, and it was clear the Conterno is bringing the rigor and perfectionism of his Barolo estate to Nervi. I was deeply impressed.
It's clear that the 2016 Gattinara is special and represents a high water mark for this already overperforming estate. The winemaking here is top-notch, and with 2016 providing the perfect vintage, it shows just how impressive the wines can be.
