2012 Montbourgeau L'Etoile Vin Jaune

Montbourgeau produces some of the finest and most elegant Vin Jaunes. Their only rival is Macle's great Château-Chalons. 

The Pope of Arbois:

Puffeney is one of the Jura's old guard. He's so well-respected within the region that he's nicknamed the Pope of Arbois.  The wines have a rugged honesty that we love.

Macle has long stood as a benchmark for the Jura. The explanation is simple: no one in the region captures elegance the way that they do.

The Grand Cru of Vin Jaune:
2011 & 2012 Macle Château-Chalon

Château-Chalon is one of the great and utterly fascinating wines of the world. Macle is the long-standing benchmark of the appellation. Sadly, Macle's reputation in Europe makes finding the wines in the U.S. extremely difficult. For quite some time, Crush has been one of the few places in the country where you can find the wines.

This may very well be the most extensive Ganevat offering we've done. It covers everything from his seldom seen sparkling wine to his sweet Sul Q, hitting nearly all of his most important wines and throwing a few obscure ones in as well. There is also a healthy amount of large formats.

Château Chalon is the Grand Cru of Vin Jaune. It's here that Vin Jaune reaches the pinnacle of refinement and age-worthiness. Curnonsky, a famous 20th Century Parisian gourmet known as the "Prince of Gastronomes," included the wines of Château Chalon among "the five great white wines of France," along with Montrachet and Yquem.

The Pope of Arbois:

Earlier this week, we offered Domaine du Pélican Trousseau Les Bérangères, which is sourced from vines that belonged to Jacques Puffeney. Today, we pay homage to Puffeney, one of the grandmasters of the Jura.

Montigny-lès-Arsures is home to the greatest expressions of Trousseau, and Les Bérangères is one of the most renowned vineyards in the village. When you combine this with d'Angerville's incredibly conscientious and sensitive winemaking, the results are deeply impressive.

Jean-François Ganevat produces an absolutely dizzying range of wines. With the freedom that such breadth affords him, brilliant and revelatory wines pop up. Cuvée du Pépé is a prime example of this. It's Chardonnay given Vin Jaune treatment - aged for over seven years under flor.

Outstanding Jura from a Volnay star. Guillaume d'Angerville makes stunning wines in Volnay, which is not news to any Burgundy lover.
